The Gowanus Art Center seeks to develop the potential for a public commons within the big box factory typology prevalent throughout the area. By peeling up the ground plane and slipping the building both below and above it, the parti allows for the extension of public open space rather than its displacement. The result is a project that aims to synthesize public and private domains.
